How long does it take to charge an EV from your Home Charge Point?

Determining the charging duration for an electric vehicle (EV) utilising a 7 kW charger depends on the EV's battery capacity and its current charge level. A straightforward method to estimate this duration involves employing the following formula:

Charging Time (hours) = Battery Capacity (Kwh) / Charging Power (Kw)

For instance, consider an EV equipped with a 50 Kwh battery and utilising a 7 Kw charger:

Charging Time = 50 Kwh / 7 Kw = 7.14 hours

Hence, using a 7 Kw charger, it would take approximately 7 hours to fully charge the EV from empty to 100%. However, it's noteworthy that most EVs exhibit faster charging rates up to roughly 80% capacity, after which the charging speed decreases to preserve the battery. Therefore, the effective charging time might slightly exceed this estimation due to this gradual reduction in charging speed.

Additionally, it's important to note that the average daily distance covered by an individual in the United Kingdom typically ranges from 20 to 25 miles. Consequently, for most days, a full charge may not be necessary, resulting in considerably shorter charging durations compared to the example above.
